Public utilities are those that are owned by the utility companies and extend to the connection point or meter of a private property. The 811 One Call Service is the best option to find public utilities. After calling 811 a public utility locator will come out and mark all public lines. Since these markings will only extend to the meter, a private locate is then needed to finish the job. About 65% of all utilities in the United States are private, so for the safety of the community Jones GPR recommends all customers call 811 as well to make sure every line, both public and private, gets located and marked.
