Private Utility Locating
Before any excavation begins, it is critical to accurately identify existing underground utilities to ensure safety and prevent costly damage.
Jones GPR provides comprehensive private utility locating services, identifying utilities from the meter or service connection into private property or other areas typically not covered by public utility marking services.
By combining Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) with advanced electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment, we are able to detect both metallic and non-metallic utilities, providing a more complete and reliable subsurface assessment.
Applications
Our utility locating services are commonly used to identify:
- Water Lines
- Electrical Utilities
- Gas Lines
- Communication Lines (Fiber, Telephone, Cable)

Difference Between Public and Private Utilities
Public vs. Private Utilities
Understanding the difference between public and private utilities is essential before any excavation work begins. Public utilities are owned and maintained by utility companies and typically extend from the main line in the street to the meter or service connection at a property. To locate these utilities, property owners should contact the 811 One Call Service, which will dispatch a locator to mark publicly owned lines at no cost.
However, these markings stop at the meter. Private utilities extend beyond the meter into the property and are the responsibility of the property owner. These lines are not marked by 811 and require a private utility locate to be properly identified.
