FAQs about GPR

Those who are unfamiliar with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) often don’t know what to expect the first time they need a scan done. On most jobs I usually get asked some questions before I start about the technology and the process by the customer. I don’t mind these questions, in fact I encourage them because I enjoy teaching people about all that GPR can do to help them. Her

e are some of the common questions I get about GPR.

Q: How big of an area can be scanned with GPR?
A: There is no limit, and Jones GPR will provide a scan for all types of jobs including trenching, coring and utility locates. For most concrete scanning, Jones GPR uses a 2’x2’ square as the standard scan size for each location.

Example of a Jones GPR scan showing the rebar pattern embedded in a concrete slab.

Q: How mobile is the equipment?
A: Very mobile. The device used to scan concrete only weighs a few pounds and is small enough to work in very tight quarters.

Q: How fast do I get the scan results?
A: Immediately. GPR data can be interpreted on the spot and all hazards will be clearly marked out in real time.

Q: Is GPR the same as X-Ray scans?
A: No, GPR and X-Ray are two different services. While X-Ray scans offer better imaging, they are slower, less mobile and much more expensive. They also e

mit dangerous radiation, so an empty job site is required for X-Ray.

Q: Is GPR Dangerous?
A: Not at all. In fact, GPR equipment only emits about 1% of the radiation that a cell phone does. This means that unlike with X-Ray, GPR scans can be performed within the normal structure of a job site.

GPR is a great tool to help get your job done with no accidents. If you have any more questions about services Jones GPR can provide please call 614-887-7226 or email John@JonesGPR.com.
